What the funding covered
- Lab internship stipends, so a student could leave a paying job for the length of the position
- Housing near the lab

Why we fund whole positions
One study followed science students for ten years and compared researchers with matched students who did no research. The students who stayed in science were the ones who did ten or more hours a week of mentored research for two or more terms. A short or occasional research experience did not change the outcome.1
Ten hours a week for two terms is a part-time job. A student who needs a part-time job to pay rent cannot give those hours away. That is why we pay for the whole position: rent, living costs, and materials. Partial help leaves the student still working a second job.
What the students work on
Our students work in the health sciences, the life sciences, and health economics. Students also publish with us. Recent articles cover infant mortality, preterm birth, gene editing, and adolescent mental health. Read the published student work.
Where they study
Our students hold research positions at 12 US universities: Stanford, UChicago, Harvard, MIT, Northwestern, USC, NYU, UNC-Chapel Hill, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, and Davidson.

Your gift pays for rent, a stipend, books, or a journal fee. It goes to a student who has the position and lacks the money to take it.
