About

About the Student Research Institute

We are students. We started this in 2022 because we kept meeting classmates who earned a research position and could not afford to take it.

What we are

The Student Research Institute is a student-run nonprofit. We raise money from companies and grant programs and give it to high school and college students who hold unpaid research positions in the health sciences, the life sciences, and health economics.

Why we stay small

A small group of college students runs SRI. We keep it that way on purpose. A larger organization needs a marketing budget, and that money would come out of what reaches students. The work splits into four jobs:

  • Company outreach: finding companies, writing proposals, and keeping the relationships
  • Grant writing: applying to economic opportunity grant programs
  • Student review: reading applications and confirming positions with labs
  • Editorial: helping students publish, on our site and in journals

Want one of those jobs? Join the team.

What we publish

Students we work with publish research articles with us. Recent pieces cover kangaroo mother care, preterm birth, gene editing, and drug delivery to the brain. Read the published student work.

What we have done

How we hold ourselves to account

  • Every statistic links to a named source.

We checked each journal article's DOI against the Crossref registry and requested every external link on September 21, 2026. The full list is on the sources page.

  • We confirm every position before we pay.

A student applies with the lab, the mentor, and the dates. We contact the lab to confirm the position exists and does not pay enough to live on.

  • Money goes to named costs for named students.

A gift pays rent, a stipend, books, or a journal fee for a specific student. We do not pool gifts into overhead.

  • We report back.

Each funder hears what its gift paid for: the kind of position, the costs covered, and what the student produced.

  • We stay small.

A handful of college students runs SRI. We buy no advertising and run no paid programs, so the money reaches students.

More on our standards, the team, the research areas we fund, and the press kit.

Your gift pays for rent, a stipend, books, or a journal fee. It goes to a student who has the position and lacks the money to take it.
